Hygiene Department…Tracking for Success

The hygiene department of a general, pedo or perio dental practice is in fact a separate producing department that can be measured for its effectiveness to the overall practice. Statistical things that you might want to know, for example are: Is your practice growing? Do you have an interceptive perio program in place? Are hygiene salaries in line with production? Is there a written x-ray protocol? Does your hygienist provide ancillary services? Bottom line…is your hygiene department successful?
Analyzing practices throughout the country for over 25 years now, we find that while hygiene departments could be huge profit centers, they are yielding some pretty abysmal results. This isn’t necessarily the fault of the hygienist, often times they are seemingly booked into eternity and single –handedly trying to manage patient recall. A number of factors can undermine your hygiene department. Improving hygiene is a multi-step process and the first place to start is tracking what is happening right now.
